Late Night on King St: A Grown-Up Guide to Melbourne CBD After Dark
Melbourne does a lot of things well, but it really earns its reputation after dark. The galleries close, the offices empty, the arenas let out, and the city quietly changes gear. If you've ever stood on a CBD footpath at 10.30pm wondering where the night goes next, this one's for you.
This is our guide to late-night Melbourne, written from 22 King Street, where we've watched a lot of good nights unfold. It's for grown-ups who want more than one more round somewhere loud, and who'd like to get home in one piece.
Why King St After Dark
King Street runs from the river up towards Flagstaff Gardens, cutting through the western edge of the CBD. By day it's suits, coffee and delivery vans. By night it turns into one of the city's late-night strips, with music spilling out of doorways and taxis idling at the kerb.
It's also handy. King St is an easy walk from both Southern Cross and Flinders Street stations, close to the river and a short trip from the arenas and stadiums. That makes it a natural landing spot after a concert, a game, a work function or a long dinner that refused to end.
A Suggested Late-Night Run
There's no wrong way to do a night in the city, but here's a run that works.
7pm: Start with a proper feed
The CBD is full of options: steaming bowls of noodles and late-night dumplings on Chinatown's laneways, share plates in the laneways off Flinders Lane, and pizza by the slice for the decisive. Book ahead on Friday and Saturday nights, or pick a walk-in place and be ready to queue.
8.30pm: The main event
Catch a gig at the arenas, a show in the theatre district or a game at one of the stadiums. Or skip the tickets and take a slow walk along the river while the city lights come on. Southbank and the riverside promenades really come alive once it's dark.
10.30pm: The second act on King St
This is where Centrefold Lounge comes in. We're the grown-up late option: three levels, five bars and showgirl performances on stage. Doors open from 8pm Sunday to Thursday and from 7pm on Fridays and Saturdays, so when the arenas empty and the dinner crowd drifts out, we're already well into the night.
It's not a nightclub crush and it's not a sit-down dinner. It's somewhere in between: a proper venue with a stage and plenty of seating. Female friendly, 18+ and a natural fit for birthdays, work celebrations, visiting mates and couples looking for something a little different. Want to see who's on? Take a look at our showgirls.
Late: Something to eat on the way home
Before you head home, grab a late bite. The CBD has plenty of late-opening noodle bars, dumpling houses and souvlaki spots, and something warm before the trip home is never a bad idea.
Bringing a Group?
Late nights get better with a crew, but bigger groups need a plan. If you're organising for 10 or more, look at our group packages. They're built around shows for your group and are popular for bucks parties, birthdays and end-of-year celebrations. Packages are priced per group and club entry is extra. Packages are for groups of 10 or more. Smaller group? Get in touch and we'll see what we can put together. See our bucks party packages for current packages and prices, and book ahead for Fridays and Saturdays.

Getting There and Getting Home
The good nights are the ones where everyone gets home. Sort out your ride before you head out.
Trains: Southern Cross and Flinders Street are both an easy walk from King St. Check the last-service times for your line before you head out, especially midweek.
Night Network: on Friday and Saturday nights, trains, trams and buses run through the night across Melbourne. After about 1am, trains run from Flinders Street, so check PTV's current timetable and your route home before the night starts.
Trams: the free tram zone covers much of the CBD, which is handy for getting to dinner or the river. Check the zone boundaries before you rely on it.
Rideshare and taxis: both work well from King St, though demand spikes after big events. Walk a block or two from the busiest corners and agree on a pickup spot with your group.
Driving: there are paid parking stations nearby. If you're drinking, leave the car at home.
Staying Safe Late in the City
Melbourne's CBD stays busy late into the night, and a little planning goes a long way.
Stick with your group, and agree on a meeting spot if anyone gets separated.
Keep your phone charged and share your location with a mate.
Know your route home before you need it.
Eat, drink water and pace yourself.
If something feels off, speak to venue security or staff, or call 000 in an emergency.
Look out for each other, including people outside your group who seem to be having a rough night.
At Centrefold Lounge we serve responsibly. Valid photo ID is required for entry (18+ only), and our team follows RSA rules at every bar, every night. If our staff think you've had enough, they'll let you know. That's how we keep the night good for everyone.
What to Wear
Smart casual. Thongs, singlets and sportswear aren't permitted. If you've come straight from a gig, dinner or the office, you'll be fine. Dress like you want the night to go well.
