The Wildcard Round kicks off the finals in late August, with the Elimination and Qualifying Finals, Semi Finals and Preliminary Finals rolling through September before the Grand Final on Saturday 26 September at the MCG. Melbourne hosts the bulk of the action, which means interstate fans, club groups and diehards are in the CBD most weekends this month.

This week it’s the real deal: the AFL’s brand-new Wildcard Round kicks off the finals series with two sudden-death, winner-takes-all knockout games at the MCG — Western Bulldogs vs Collingwood on Friday 28 August (7:40pm) and Melbourne vs Carlton on Saturday 29 August (7:35pm), both fighting for the last two spots in the finals bracket. Two massive nights at the ‘G, back to back, right on our doorstep — if you’re heading into the city for either match, King Street is the closest place to keep the night going once the siren sounds.
